* Stonehaven Open Air Pool, near Aberdeen:

Opens from 10pm until midnight every Wednesday during the summer.

* Nantwich Outdoor Brine Pool, Cheshire:

Possibly the only inland brine pool left in the country.

* Sandford Parks Lido, Cheltenham:

Family friendly but with lanes reserved for serious swimmers.

* Jubilee Pool, Penzance, Cornwall:

Not open for the 2014 season but when open, the largest sea-water lido in the country.

Bude Sea Pool, Cornwall

Future in doubt, but still open for 2014.

(Also worth a mention in Cornwall:

Perranporth: Large natural pool fills at high tide.

Polperro: Small natural pool –

Portreath: Natural tidal pools l on either side of Portreath beach as well as Lady Basset’s Baths, six bath-shaped pools, which were made from the rock to catch the tide.

There are also sea pools at Mousehole, Cape Cornwall, Porthtowan, Millendreath, and Treyarnon Bay.)

* Shap Swimming Pool, Cumbria:

Heated outdoor pool .

* Chagford Swimming Pool, Devon:

River-fed pool with solar warming system. Open mainly afternoons.

* Pells Pool, Lewes, East Sussex:

The oldest freshwater pool in the country.

* Lymington Sea Water Baths, Hampshire:

One of the oldest in the country … still one of the largest.

* Tinside Lido, Plymouth :

Beautifully restored sea-water pool.

* Arundel Lido, West Sussex:

A good-sized outdoor pool dating from the 1960s.

* Ilkley Pool & Lido , West Yorkshire:

One of the best outdoor pools in the north of England … freshwater and unheated.

* Droitwich Spa Lido, Worcestershire:

See website for details of “water zorbing” events (walking on water).

* Thermae Spa, Bath:

Not strictly a swimming pool but it is a pretty amazing place to soak up the sun before heading to the Roman Baths.


* Clifton Lido, Bristol:

Essentially for members but non-members can apply for passes (about £20 for a three-hour session).
