SHEDNOTES 70: Bleeding students

The Shed does not share the politicians’ obsession with producing more and more graduates but has an interest in the argument over how to pay for them and proposes the following …
Every over-18 has an entitlement, in government vouchers, for £6,000 a year for two years of learning, in college or apprenticeship. This should be enough for an intensive practice-based degree along the lines of the old B Tech diplomas and the learning providers would have to re-gear to supply them. Those who want a more leisurely scarves-and-beer kind of university experience would be free to pay a top-up for the three-year option.
